Opinion - Power
Inverter power

New Delhi is reeling under severe power cuts this year and the press is reporting that extensively. But surprisingly there is no public hue and cry. A few years ago, such massive power cuts had bought people out on the streets and the government of the day had to run for cover. Wiser from that experience, it seems most residents of the capital have bought inverters that provide some respite from the power cuts, though only for short durations. Keeping this in mind, the private power distribution companies in the capital have devised a strategy to stagger power cuts in most areas and ensure that normal supply is back before the inverters run out. Once sufficient time is given for re-charging, the power is switched off again.

But what has intrigued most people is that despite the seven-eight hours of staggered power cuts, the monthly electricity bill does not reflect any corresponding reduction. This is the new mystery that the citizens of Delhi are trying to solve.
