Coca-Cola `surprised' at Karnataka case against it

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Aug. 19

Soft drinks major Coca-Cola on Saturday expressed surprise at media reports that the Karnataka Government was filing a case against the company after it had conducted some tests and found chemicals higher than permitted levels `in certain soft drinks.'

The company said, "as things stand, Coca-Cola has no knowledge of such tests nor has the company received any communication from the Karnataka Health Ministry."

Coca-Cola was responding to media reports that the State after conducting tests on a bottle of Coke found the chemical content (melathin) higher than permitted levels (0.142 as against the permitted 0.1).

In a statement to the press, Coca-Cola said that all its products were completely safe.

"We regularly monitor the quality and safety of our products and the samples are tested in reputed and accredited national and international labs."

The State Health Minister, Mr R. Ashok, announced on Friday that a case had been registered against Coca-Cola in the Small Causes Court in Bangalore and the case was admitted on August 12.

He had indicated that the State might consider a ban like those imposed in five other states. A ban had already been enforced in Government educational institutions and hospitals.

The Government had also issued a directive to all private establishments to refrain from the sale of `carbonated drinks,' he said.
