KoPT sails into consultancy

The KoPT Chairman, Dr A. K. Chanda.

The Kolkata Port Trust proposes to undertake consultancy job in a big way. A beginning has been made, with the port's Hydraulic Study Department offering consultancy services to various organisations and in the process gaining useful experience. In 2005-06, the port earned about Rs 1 crore by providing the services and the figure in the current fiscal, it is estimated, will be more.

The purpose of embarking on providing consultancy services, as the KoPT Chairman, Dr A. K. Chanda, explains, is to earn more revenue by fully exploiting the skill and infrastructure available in the port but not always fully used. He is of the view that it should be possible to involve other departments, particularly marine and port and harbour engineering, for offering consultancy services in their respective fields.

Dr Chanda does not rule out the possibility of even constituting separate bodies under KoPT to provide consultancy services on a much larger scale with participation of various departments.
