Five bogies gutted; no casualties

The derailment of a goods train between Secunderabad and Hyderabad apparently saved many lives in the express train.

Hyderabad , Aug. 20

It was a miraculous escape for the passengers of Chennai-Hyderabad Express on Sunday morning when five bogies of the train were fully gutted in a fire that broke out in one of the compartments few minutes after the train left the Secunderabad railway station towards Hyderabad station.

The derailment of a goods train at James Street station between Secunderabad and Hyderabad has apparently turned fortunate for the passengers of the express train. Many of the passengers got down at Secunderabad station itself following an official announcement that the train's departure for Hyderabad was likely to be delayed by an hour on account of the goods train derailment.

The fire reportedly broke out in S9 coach and spread to the adjoining S8, S7, S6 and S10 bogies. With an alert passenger in S10 compartment pulling the chain, the train came to a halt and around 25 passengers in the coach jumped to safety. Luckily, there were no passengers in the other four ill-fated coaches. All of them had got down at Secunderabad station itself.

The railway personnel swung into action immediately and de-linked the train from the burning coaches and prevented further damage. Five fire engines from the nearby areas rushed to the spot to put out the flames. The fire engines had to battle for close to three hours.

While the railway authorities ruled out the possibility of any terrorist involvement in the accident, forensic experts from the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory rushed to the spot for collecting the remnants to investigate whether any explosives were planted in the train.

The railway authorities have announced that the Commissioner of Railway Safety, South Central Circle, would conduct a statutory inquiry on August 23 to determine the cause of the fire.
