CII may tie up with B-schools for certified courses in HR

"Business excellence today is HR excellence and not product excellence. Companies that do not have HR at their core do not have a future"

Chennai , Aug. 21

"Today HR is becoming more administration oriented. But it should be the core of every strategy of a company regardless of whether it is a marketing, finance or sales strategy," said Mr B. Santhanam, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry national committee on HR, IR & ER and Managing Director, Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd.

"Business excellence today is HR excellence and not product excellence. Companies that do not have HR at their core do not have a future," he said at a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Southern Region. Indicating that there would be an acute shortage of HR people in future, he said HR should be made interesting for bright youngsters to opt for as a career option.

HR practices

The seminar discussed the need to encourage creative HR practices.

He said CII would identify people wanting to switch from other divisions in a company into HR and would tie up with B-Schools to provide these employees with certified courses. Over the next year, CII will bring out a book collating best HR practices in the industry, Mr Santhanam said.

Mr B. Sudhakar, Head, Corporate HR & Administration, Tata Chemicals, said HR should be approached through the social sciences route (involving anthropology, sociology and psychology) and not the process route (operations, marketing, administration). He said HR professionals must build capacity to be on par with CEOs.

Suggestions on HR

Awards for excellence in HR practices were given to Bharat Electronics Ltd, Coromandel Fertilisers, ITC Ltd - Bhadrachalam Paper Board Division and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. The companies made short presentations on the steps they had taken to attract and retain talent in their organisations.
