Steps are being taken to establish a cotton research station in Perambalur District, the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Mr A. Raja, has said. Inaugurating a one-day National Seminar on `Coir Production' sponsored by the Coir Board at Perambalur recently, he said the research station would benefit the cotton growers in the region. He appealed to the members of self-help groups to set up coir manufacturing units and avail themselves of the subsidy-based programmes of the coir board and derive maximum advantage.

The Secretary of the Coir Board, Mr M. Kumararaja said the annual turnover of coir products by units with the assistance from the Board was about Rs 2,000 crore in which export formed Rs 504 crore.
