Bayer CropScience Ltd has decided to discontinue its production of crop science and pharmaceutical products at its Thane plant in 2007.
The company told the Bombay Stock Exchange after its board meeting on Thursday that the board had approved the proposal for a phased cessation of manufacture of its products and that of Bayer Healthcare at Thane in the course of 2007. "This is a strategic decision to enhance synergies in their respective production activities for the India market," the company said. No details were available on the number of people working at the plant.
A company spokesperson said that the crop-science products would be produced at the company's facilities at Ankleshwar and Himmatnagar in Gujarat. The pharma products would be shifted to existing third party producers, the spokesperson said, indicating that the closure would not impact operations in the country.
The company clarified that closing the plant was "not a closure of the company's undertaking". On whether the Thane plant would be put on the block, he replied, "it was too early to say."
