Bangalore , Aug. 25 The Karnataka Government is setting up an Agri Export Zone (AEZ) for cultivation of vanilla. A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed between the Agricultural & Processed Foods Exports Development Authority (Apeda) and the Department of Horticulture, Karnataka. The AEZ would cover districts of South Kanara, North Kanara, Udipi, Coorg, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Shimoga and Belgaum, among others where vanilla is predominantly grown as an inter-crop with other plantation crops. An investment of Rs 2.56 crore would go into the creation of AEZ over three years. The AEZ would focus on providing quality planting material, training growers in cultivation and post harvest practices, organic farming, setting up of processing facilities among others. It is estimated that 47 tonnes of vanilla is grown in about 1,081 hectares in the State at present. With the AEZ coming into operation, the State plans to increase the area to around 1,500 ha and triple the output to 150 tonnes by 2009-10.
