Australian wheat sent for tests to CFTRI

Kochi , Aug. 25

Samples from the 36,100 tonnes of wheat, which arrived from Australia to the Kochi port has been sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, for testing. It is mandatory that all food items arriving at Indian seaports be tested before they are permitted to land, sources at the Port Health Organisation said.

There is nothing unique to these tests and the samples have been sent to CFTRI because the State laboratory at Kakkanad is not equipped to conduct such tests on wheat, Port Health officials added. The results are expected in a couple of days, depending on which the wheat could be permitted to offload at the Kochi Port.

Discharge rate

The wheat imported from Freemantle, Australia, on ship M V Turicum, is meant for the Food Corporation of India. Sources at the port added that subsequent to the tests, the consignment would be discharged manually before it is repacked. It is expected that about 3,000 tonnes of wheat would be discharged per day, entailing close to 12 days for the total cargo to be discharged.

Wheat imports from Australia are expected at the ports of Kochi, Chennai, Mangalore, Vishakapatnam and Tuticorin in the coming weeks. FCI expected about 1.2 lakh tonnes of wheat to land at the Kochi Port. The wheat is part of the imports contracted with the Australian Wheat Board.
