Dunlop's Ambattur unit to restart production

Chennai , Aug. 26

Dunlop India Ltd will recommence commercial production of automobile tyres at its Ambattur plant from tomorrow (Sunday), according to official sources.

Dunlop Factory Employees Union representatives said the formal launch of production will start on Sunday and the factory will work two shifts from Monday. Initially the plans are to start with manufacture of light commercial vehicles.

Dunlop's factory here starts production nearly a decade after it suspended operations in 1998. Union leaders said over 325 workers would be inducted in the first phase and as production is ramped up over the next one month, another 325 workers would be involved in production. When the factory commences operations at full capacity early in 2007, the total workforce would be about 1,000.

The average salary, after a 20 per cent cut that they agreed to, would be about Rs 6,500 a month. According to officials, the initial production will be about 40-45 tonnes a month and the factory will reach its full capacity of about 140 tonnes in three months. It may be recalled that the Kolkata-based Ruia group acquired Dunlop last December from the Jumbo Group.
