Education States - Karnataka `Education improves US-India contact' Our Bureau
Mangalore , Aug. 28 India is second only to Germany as the country of choice for American scholars seeking Fullbright grants to study overseas, according to Mr David T. Hopper, Consul General, United States Consulate, Chennai. Since 1950, nearly 7,400 Indians and Americans have received educational exchange grants under the bi-national Fullbright programme. Mr Hopper was speaking at the inauguration of the 13th Twinning Programme (engineering) at the International Centre for Applied Sciences - a unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) - in Manipal on Monday. He said that over 80,000 Indian students are studying in various colleges and universities in the US. This is more than double the 1998-99 figure of 37,000 students. Higher education is one of the brightest areas for people-to-people contact between the US and India, he said. The US Consulate at Chennai processed 1.8 lakh visa applications in the last year. The consulate is giving top priority for assisting India with HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, he added. The Chancellor of MAHE, Dr Ramdas M. Pai, presided over the function. Dr Rahesekharan P. Warrier, Vice-Chancellor of MAHE, was also present.
