Lagging behind Bangalore, Gurgaon and Hyderabad in attracting IT companies.

Chennai , Aug. 28

Chennai is yet to catch up with Bangalore, Gurgaon and Hyderabad in attracting information technology companies. It has to get companies to set up base here before expanding to other cities in Tamil Nadu, according to Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Minister for Communications and Information Technology.

He was responding to a suggestion to move IT companies to cities such as Tirunelveli, Karaikudi, Chidambaram, Vellore and Salem due to low costs in setting up and operating.

Inaugurating a one-day seminar on ITES Competitiveness organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) - Tamil Nadu State Council (TNSC), he said the Centre was committed to creating IT parks under the Software Technology Parks of India scheme in many cities.

"We need private entrepreneurs to set up IT/ITES companies. The Government is only a catalyst in the process," he said. Under the STPI scheme, 25-seater incubation centres would be leased to entrepreneurs for a short period. He said the State Government would announce some policies on this shortly.

Mr Ar Rm Arun, Convenor, IT & Communications Panel, FICCI - TNSC, spoke of the opportunity in Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO).
