Agri-Biz & Commodities - Coconut & Copra
Laid low

K.K. Mustafah

EXCESS SUPPLY: Coconut oil being weighed at an oil mill in Kochi. Coconut oil price is fluctuating between Rs 4,700 and Rs 5,000 a quintal. Availability of other edible oils at cheaper prices has affected its demand, mainly for cooking purpose in Kerala.

Demand, even in toiletry and other industries, has not picked up due to cheap substitutes such as palm oil. Competition amongst producers within the country has also contributed to the low prices as supply in the country, of late, has exceeded demand.
