Kolkata box traffic up 15 pc in April-Aug

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Sept. 1

Between April and August this year, Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled 96,983 TEUs of container traffic compared to 84,553 TEUs in the same period last year, thus posting around 15 per cent growth.

KDS would attribute this to the growth in imports of peas, electronic goods, machinery, chemicals and Nepal-bound general cargo and rise in the exports of pig iron, iron and steel, jute and jute goods and ferrochrome.

In August 2006, the container throughput at KDS at 21,309 TEUs was the highest ever in a single month, surpassing the previous best of 19,604 TEUs achieved in April.

In August 2005, the throughput was 17,542 TEUs.
