Shipping Asia-Europe sea trade up
With annual container throughput of 15 million TEUs, the Asia-Europe trade route ranks third behind Inter-Asia (32 million) and Trans-Pacific (18 million). Accounting for two-thirds of global traffic, Asia, with a favourable balance of trade (both in value and volume), is the international hub. In terms of volumes, Asia-Europe trade has enjoyed spectacular growth: 21 per cent in 2003, 16 per cent in 2004, 12 per cent in 2005 and an estimated 13 per cent in 2006. China is outpacing the rest of Asia, accounting for 50 per cent of all shipments on the Asia-Europe routes. India lags far behind, with only one port handling more than one million TEUs compared to 13 in China. While Hong Kong and Singapore are still the world's top container handling ports, Shanghai and Shenzen are fast catching up. Three of the world's top six container-handling ports are in China and all are in Asia, with Pushan in South Korea and Kaoshing in Taiwan rounding out the list.
