Tsunami-affected village to manufacture bio fertilisers from March

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 5

Tsunami-affected fishing village Pattipulam in Kancheepuram district will manufacture bio-fertiliser and bio-control agents from March next year.

The unit will come up about a km from Pattipulam employing about 100 women from Pattipulam belonging to six self-help groups.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), Orchid Trust (the corporate social responsibility division of Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals) and the Rural Development Department of the Tamil Nadu Government will fund the Rs 77-lakh project.

The ADB has granted about Rs 38.5 lakh for the project, while Orchid Trust will invest about Rs 10 lakh.

"The remaining amount will be obtained through loan from banks," said Mr S. Mani, Managing Trustee, Orchid Trust. He said Indian Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank had expressed interest to fund the project.

The unit plans to produce 50 tonnes of Trichoderma, 33 tonnes of Pseudomonas, 33 tonnes of Azospirillum and 34 tonnes of phosphobacteria a year, a press release said.

Bio-fertiliser is a supplement to chemical fertilisers.

"The national requirement for bio-fertilisers is about 3.75 lakh tonnes, while the production is only 3,000 tonnes. There is a lot of scope for this unit to cater to this market," said Mr Mani.

He said the State Government had expressed interest to buy bio-fertiliser manufactured in this unit.
