Centre's gesture to weaver co-ops

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 5

In an effort to help weaver cooperatives, the Centre has re-introduced the scheme for reimbursement of one-time rebate at 10 per cent on sale of handloom products by the handloom agencies for a three-year period from April 2006.

Accordingly, Primary Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies and Apex Cooperatives would get marketing support.

A 10 per cent rebate for a period of 128 days in a year, especially during festival period, would be allowed in sales emporia etc. The 10 per cent rebate has been a long-pending demand of weavers in AP.

It is expected to give a benefit of approximately Rs 25 crore to them during the next three years, according to a press release from the Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles.
