Opinion - Letters
Satellite city

The decision of the Government of Tamil Nadu to `drop' the proposal for creating a satellite city outside Chennai is regrettable. The proposal is not new and has been around for over two decades now. Having a satellite city will reduce congestion and improve the quality of life. The State is engaged in securing numerous manufacturing and service businesses and is attracting a lot of international attention. If at this stage the extra city space is not created, the city could self-destruct.

Already, congestion is a matter of grave concern. The recent litigations in the courts regarding the illegal constructions and court-ordered demolitions reflect a dismal state of affairs. It is unfortunate that political considerations have emerged to oppose the proposal. The Chief Minister can certainly take a stand in the long term interest of the of the State and the city, and not succumb to political pressures. The proposal should be pursued in all seriousness.
