Connect 2006 had over 80 speakers, 1,500 unique visitors

Connect 2006, an information technology and communications event jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Tamil Nadu Government, with the theme of 'creating a knowledge-driven ecosystem' saw a total of over 80 speakers addressing various issues and challenges faced by the IT industry in Tamil Nadu, and an attendance of over 1,500 unique visitors, according to Mr Gopal Srinivasan, Chairman, Connect 2006 and Director, TVS Electronics Ltd.

The speakers included representatives of academia, government, professional bodies and the industry, and the event showcased products, solutions and services across segments of hardware and electronics, telecommunications, software and BPO.

Looking forward, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, Co-Chairman, Connect 2006 and President and Chief Executive Officer, Cognizant Technology Solutions, said that the event had addressed the issue of giving the Tamil Nadu Government a working plan to implement policies that would help fuel growth in the industry.

Mr Srinivasan said that judging by current growth, the output of information and communications technology in Tamil Nadu would be around $20 billion by 2011 - the challenge is to set a target of $30 billion and see how it can be achieved.

He said that the event dealt with some of the key areas that would promote this kind of growth, which included promoting tier II cities, creating satellite cities, developing talent, promoting institutions of all kinds and furthering e-governance initiatives.
