TNAU for standardised organic farming package

Coimbatore , Sept 13

Though market opportunities exist for organic farm products, a standardised set of organic farming practices evolved through scientific approach are needed for advocating commercial grade organic farming, according to Dr C. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamilnadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

Often, the debate on defining the concept of organic farming is waged with emotion or ideological moorings rather than with scientific understanding or pragmatism, he said while inaugurating a five-day training programme on organic farming jointly being conducted by the TNAU and the National Centre for Organic Farming, Ghaziabad.

There has been greater awareness on organic farming and the demand for organically raised food is steadily growing in both developed and developing economies at an impressive rate of 22-25 per cent.

At the same time, issues relating to promotion of organic cultivation in terms of food for all, ability of the system to meet the nutrient requirement of crops entirely from organic sources, its quality, and lastly its economic viability, need to be scientifically clarified, because development of cost-effective packages would be determined by market forces and not by scientists, Dr Ramasamy said.

As a proactive measure, TNAU has undertaken an exercise of generating objective information on organic farming practices, he added.
