Pests States - Andhra Pradesh AP alert on pest attack Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 13 Incidence of disease in groundnut crop in parts of the dry Rayalseema region and rice in the flood affected districts of coastal Andhra, have been reported, even as the State received light rains during the past few days. Due to the dry weather in Rayalseema, the incidence of Peanut Stem Necrosis Disease has been on the rise in Anantapur and Chittoor, the main groundnut growing districts. Giving a weather-based agro advisory, the Agromet Cell of the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), has advised farmers to remove weeds like Parthenium, Achiranthus etc to prevent the further spread of the disease. For control, it said spray of monocrotophos or dimethoate in recommended dosage should be useful.
Sheath blight
In the floods-affected coastal Andhra districts, where rice is the predominant crop, the incidence of sheath blight has been noticed. Along with it, rodents are also damaging the crop. In Nalgonda district, the dry weather is exposing the cotton crop to pest attacks. Sugarcane crop in Medak district is also under threat from woolly aphis pest. Dr D. Raji Reddy, Principal Scientist (Agromet), & Head of the Cell, said plant protection measures should be taken up wherever there is rain free period of at least six hours. Rodent management is best achieved through community efforts. According to a forecast made by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, light to moderate rains could occur in all the three regions of the State in the next few days.
