INTERNATIONAL CONTAINERS being loaded at the Inland Container Depot in Amingaon, Guwahati on Thursday. — Ritu Raj Konwar

Amingaon (Guwahati) , Sept. 14

This year Pakistan is set to emerge as a major buyer of Indian tea routed through the local inland container depot (ICD) for exports.

Till the 12th rake, which left the ICD about a week ago for Kolkata port, the throughput was 849 TEUs, including 136 TEUs for Pakistan.

During the same period last year, not a single tea container for Pakistan was handled by the ICD here. The major exporter so far this year to Pakistan has been McLeod Russel (122 TEUs), followed by Hindustan Lever (14 TEUs). The carrier-wise break-ups show that the bulk of the shipments, 88 TEUs, has been undertaken so far by APL, followed by K Line (44 TEUs). Singapore-based PIL handled a meagre 4 TEUs.

Shipments to UAE

The United Arab Emirates, too, is buying large quantities of Assam tea shipped through the local ICD, though not necessarily for its own consumption. Tea exported to Jebel Ali port of the UAE is used mainly for blending and packaging for re-shipments to other countries. Till the 12th rake, 76 TEUs for the UAE were handled by the ICD whereas the throughput in the same period last year was 140 TEUs.

The throughput for the UAE, tea circles here feel, will rise during the remainder of the current tea season, with the arrival of the second flush tea.

The total throughput of the local ICD will be up by about 10 per cent this year over last year's 2,300 TEUs, according to tea and shipping circles involved in shipments through the ICD.

Meanwhile, the prospects of some new international traffic for the ICD have brightened. Baker Hughes, an international firm assisting oil drilling, has decided to import chemicals and other materials through the ICD for Premier Oil due to start drilling in Cachar region and Canaro due to start drilling in Sibsagar district. The imports, the volume not yet known, will be spread over the next one year or so. Some quantities of imported sports materials too will be handled by the ICD for the National Games due to be held in February next year.
