Cashew Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports States - Kerala Cashew Export Promotion Council sets Rs 5,000-cr target for 2015 Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Sept. 14 The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CECPI), which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, is targeting exports worth Rs 5,000 crore by 2015. The council is also aiming at employment generation of 10 lakh by that year, according to Mr Walter D'Souza, Chairman, CECPI. He said here on Thursday that the targets could be achieved by increasing the domestic crop size to about 12.5 lakh tonnes in a phased manner. The Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, under the Union Ministry of Agriculture, had chalked out definite plans in this respect, he said.
Buyer-seller meet
CECPI is organising an international buyer-seller meet, styled Kaju India 2006, here from September 15 to 17 as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Representatives of cashew buyers, retailers, brokers, quality experts, consultants and other supporting services from abroad, apart from Indian exporters, will participate in the meet. The meet will also unveil a vision document for 2020 with a definite blueprint of the roadmap for global cashew exports. Mr D'Souza said that more than 200 delegates had already registered themselves for participating in the meet and the number was expected to be in the region of 250. The registered participants included 40 foreign delegates from 16 countries representing over 80 per cent of the global cashew trade. Referring to domestic cashew scenario, Mr D'Souza said that CECPI planned to evolve a strategy to arrest the colossal waste of cashew apple. This would generate about 20 per cent more realisation for the growers with an aggregate of around Rs 400 crore for the country. He said that CECPI would propagate the intrinsic nutritional values of cashew and it had submitted a project proposal entailing an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore in this regard to the Centre. The council is making efforts to get Kollam in Kerala declared as a "town of export excellence" under the provision of the export-import policy of the Centre. This would help recognised associations of cashew units get access to the funds under the Market Access Initiative scheme for creating focused technological services, Mr D'Souza said.
