Indo-US working group on quality medicine soon

C.R. Sukumar

Hyderabad , Sept. 14

A joint Working Group of the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) and the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USP) would be constituted shortly to work towards evolving standards for quality, safety and efficacy of medicines in the country.

This comes close on the heels of the memorandum of understanding signed by the IPC and USP during the first week of August, according to the USP Executive Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Roger L. Williams, M.D.

The MoU was aimed at promoting better co-operation between the two countries by exchange of information and to increase awareness on the importance of quality, safety and efficacy of medicines, he said.

The Working Group, which would consist of an equal number of representatives designated by each of the parties, would evaluate and constantly monitor the joint activities of IPC and USP to be undertaken within the framework of the MoU, Dr Williams told Business Line recently.

During September last year, USP had established its first site overseas in India by incorporating US Pharmacopoeia-India Private Ltd with headquarters at the ICICI Knowledge Park in Hyderabad.

"This was followed by the formal inauguration of our modern office and laboratory at ICICI Knowledge Park in February this year. The laboratory involves experienced Indian scientists in the standards-setting activities of USP," Dr Williams said.
