Mixed trend at Kochi tea auction

There was 7,93,000 kg of dust tea on offer at the Kochi tea auction. Prices of superior CTC varieties gravitated lower from Rs 3 to 5, while medium varieties eased from Rs 2 to 3 and below medium fell by a rupee. Orthodox high grown varieties were dearer by Re 1 to 2, while medium varieties remained steady.

Exporters were found active in the medium CTC varieties, while blenders showed interest in good liquoring varieties and domestic buyers remained selective in their purchases.

Best CTC dust varieties commanded Rs 60 to 72, medium dust from Rs 55 to 60 and below medium were quoted from Rs 48 to 53. High grown BOPD varieties commanded Rs 96 to 114, medium BOPD were at Rs 49 to 52 and secondaries ranged from Rs 45 to 51.

Leaf Sale

There was good demand for the 1,96,000 kg of leaf tea on offer at the auction. Medium broken and whole leaf grades firmed up by Rs 2 to 4. Smaller broken and fannings remained barely steady since they witnessed less demand. High grown orthodox varieties were dearer by Rs 2 to 3, while price of CTC leaf eased by Rs 1 to 2. While orthodox varieties witnessed good demand from exporters, there was less demand for CTC varieties.

Best Nilgiri leaf was quoted from Rs 75 to 85, medium orthodox ranged from Rs 56 to 75 and plain orthodox from Rs 50 to 53. Best CTC leaf was at Rs 53 to 56 and medium CTC at Rs 48 to 52.

Top Prices

In dust varieties, Kodanad BOPD commanded the top price at Rs 114, followed by Parkside BOPD at Rs 98, Pasuparai FD at Rs 96 and Pasuparai SFD at Rs 90. Chamraj FOP quoted the top price in the leaf segment at Rs 119, followed by Chamraj OP at Rs 117, Havukal BOPF at Rs 105 and Tiger Hill BOPF at Rs 102.
