Traders laud sales tax waiver on oilseed cake

Chennai , Sept. 15

Traders have welcomed the Tamil Nadu Government's decision to exempt oil cake and peas from sales tax.

According to those in the oil cake trade, these were among the few agro products that continued to attract sales tax. It had been a long pending demand to which the Government had been sympathetic.

Groundnut seed cake in Tamil Nadu costs around Rs 900 a 70 kg bag. Now the 4 per cent exemption would be passed on to the buyers. Trade representatives said that they would wait for the formal government order before committing themselves further on the impact.

The order would clarify issues relating to inter-State taxes. Most other States levy sales tax on oilcake, they said.

Groundnut crop had been affected in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh due to unseasonal heavy rains and drought. Normally, arrivals would commence after Diwali but now it would be slow. But, in February 2007, a good harvest is anticipated and the exemption on the oil cake would then be apparent, they said.
