NTPC scouts for sites for nuclear project

To buy 2.5 mmscmd gas from spot markets

New Delhi , Sept. 15

NTPC Ltd is exploring possible sites for its proposed nuclear power project in various States, including Tamil Nadu and is in talks with the Department of Atomic Energy for the initiative.

"We are keenly watching the Indo-US nuclear agreement and at the same time looking for probable sites in various States such as Tamil Nadu for setting up the project once all the approvals come," NTPC's Chairman and Managing Director, Mr T. Sankaralingam, said. He said the project would come up only during the Twelfth Plan period (2012-17).

Speaking at the sidelines of a power conference, Mr Sankaralingam said the company plans to import 2.5 million metric standard cubic metres a day (mmscmd) of liquefied natural gas through the spot market over the next three months. "The tendering process is on. We plan to import LNG by purchasing spot cargoes," he told reporters. The imported LNG will be used to meet the fuel requirements at NTPC's five thermal power plants, he said. The LNG would be utilised at the Anta, Auraiya, Kawas, Gandhar and Dadri plants.

Besides buying LNG from spot markets, the company has forayed into exploration and production of natural gas and is looking to tie-up long-term agreements as well to meet fuel requirements at its gas-fired projects. Mr Sankaralingam also said NTPC is looking to buy coal mines overseas but refused to elaborate.
