Farmers plan rally against agri policies

New Delhi, Sept. 15

The All India Kisan Sabha will organise four national `jathas' from Kanyakumari, Mumbai, Jammu and Agartala, which will converge in New Delhi on November 20, 2006.

Local level rallies will also be organised at the state, district and village levels against agricultural policies.

The focus of the rally will be to get the Government's attention on ensuring remunerative prices for agricultural production, increasing credit facilities, reintroducing quantitative restrictions on imports with higher customs duty, crop insurance and the Seeds Bill 2005, amongst others.

"In 1991, the per capita availability of food grain was 510 gm per day against 411 gm in 2003" said Mr S. Rameshchandran Pillai, President, All India Kisan Sabha, addressing a press conference. They would demand from the Government more remunerative prices for production as well as protection of crops, he said. Over one lakh farmers are expected to join the rally.
