Opinion - Letters
Service cost

This is with reference to "Most banks unsure of services cost" (Business Line, September 16): Customers in the rural areas are ignorant, and do not have access to the bank facilities available to their urban counterparts. For instance, a PSU bank insists on a minimum balance being maintained in savings bank account in the rural areas and service charges are levied if the balance is less than the limit. The same bank allows members of women's self-help groups (SHGs) to open no-frills accounts in Madurai with zero balance. But no such advantage is available to members of SHGs in the rural areas.

Why this discrimination against rural customers?
