Tourism States - Kerala Uttaranchal seeks KSINC help to boost tourism Our Bureau
Kochi , Sept. 18 The Government of Uttaranchal has approached Kerala Shipping Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) seeking its expertise for the promotion of water-based tourism activities. Mr K.N. Satheesh, Managing Director of KSINC, said that the corporation is readying a project report for operating and managing water-based tourism activities, building of boats and construction of jetties following a request from Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd (GMVNL), a company under the Government of Uttaranchal. A team of officials from KSINC will soon visit Uttaranchal to get a first-hand understanding of the water-based tourism potential there, he added. According to Mr Satheesh, this is a major achievement for KSINC as the corporation's foray into water-related tourism activities in Kerala has got a tremendous boost with the interest shown by Uttaranchal, which is known for its big lakes and scenic beauty.
DIVERSIFICATION
KSINC diversified into the tourism sector, boat building and barge operations after many of its passenger ferry services were discontinued following the construction of bridges connecting islands to mainland in Kochi. Mr Satheesh also said that a team led by the Managing Director of GMVNL, Mr R.K. Singh, has arrived to see the facilities that the corporation has in Kochi for building steel, fibre and wooden boats. They have evinced interest in kettuvalloms, the traditional houseboats of Kerala. Meanwhile, KSINC had bagged an order from the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology for constructing a 17.5-m research vessel at a cost of Rs 2.7 crore. The vessel will be constructed at the corporation' s Thoppumpady yard and will have facilities like deep freezer and radar. The single-hull sea-worthy vessel will be built as per specifications of the IRS-class and Mercantile Marine Department. The corporation is also expecting an order from the Surface Transport Department of West Bengal for the construction of six passenger ferries. The Kerala Government recently accorded sanction to the corporation to build a 600-tonne barge for carrying out its cargo operations, Mr Satheesh said.
