Cotton textile exports cross target

Cotton textiles exports during 2005-06 have exceeded the $4.2-billion target set by the Ministry of Textiles for the financial year with total shipments reaching $4.87 billion.

All the three components in the cotton textiles export basket - made-ups, yarn and fabrics - could make impressive growth of 39 per cent, 27 per cent and 9 per cent respectively during the fiscal year.

According to Mr B. K. Patodia, Chairman of Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council, export of cotton yarn, constituting a 30 per cent share in the overall export basket, showed a 33.4 per cent growth in quantity reaching the level of 546 million kg. The value of yarn shipment to the US market had risen four-fold from Rs 21.65 crore in the previous year to Rs 109 crore in 2005-06. Korea, Bangladesh and Italy continuing to remain major destinations for India's yarn, export to China rose sharply by 65 per cent, Mr Patodia stated in a communication.
