The Coimbatore Motor Parts Dealers Association has sought reduction in VAT on automobile goods in view of the difficult situation faced by the dealers.
At the AGM of the association, it was decided to request the Chairman of the empowered committee on VAT, Mr Asim Dasgupta, that "in view of the perilous condition" of the small automobile traders (auto retailers), the rate of VAT on automobile goods should be reduced from 12.5 per cent to four per cent.
The association also said that there were many items like spares of tractors, bearings and other items used in agriculture where the rate of VAT was four per cent.
The decision of Tamil Nadu Government to introduce VAT from January 1, 2007 was welcomed.
The following were elected as association office bearers for 2006-07: Mr S. Amarjit Singh, President; Mr R. Sivakumar and Mr E.M. Hameed Ibrahim, Vice-Presidents; Mr V. Sarangapani, Secretary; Mr K.C. Sekar and Mr Raguramgupta, Joint Secretaries; and Mr P. Srinivasan, Honorary Treasurer.
