Karnataka mulls welfare board for building workers

The Karnataka Government is planning to constitute a welfare board for the benefit of workers in the construction industry.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the Karnataka Labour Minister, Mr Iqbal Ansari, said that the `Karnataka Building Construction Workers' Welfare Board' will be constituted on November 1.
Funds
The Government, which will collect one per cent cess on the construction works above Rs 10 lakh, will divert the amount to the board. The Government expects to collect more than Rs 150 crore every year through this initiative.
The funds will be utilised to provide pension to construction workers above 60 years. Women workers will be given delivery wages. Financial assistance will be given to the family members of the workers who die during construction activities, he said.
The Government has already issued a notification on the establishment of the board. A formal Government order will be issued after October 19, and the board will be constituted on November 1.
Five members each will represent employers and employees on the board. Added to this, department officials and the minister will be part of the board.
Stating that the board will be an autonomous body, he said it would have powers to relax or implement conditions depending on the situation.
He said that the workers in the construction industry had sought for the establishment of such a board.
Added to this, the Government is also contemplating to take up welfare measures for workers in other unorganised sectors.
In 2002, a Bill focusing on welfare measures for 67 sectors came in for discussion at the Upper House of the legislature. The Government is planning to reintroduce that Bill with some modifications, he said.
