Kolkata , Sept. 19

An eight-member trade delegation from Ireland is arriving in city on Wednesday on a four-day visit to explore business opportunities in West Bengal and also negotiate possible joint ventures with local partners. Organised by Invest Northern Ireland, the region's economic development agency, the team is led by Lord Diljit Rana, Vice-President of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The delegation comprises senior executives from many leading Northern Ireland companies and from the University of Ulster, which already has academic and technology transfer partnerships with institutions of higher learning in Mumbai and Chennai.

A company represented in the trade delegation is `Mivan', specialising in fast-track construction techniques which have substantial business scope in Mumbai. Mentas Ltd (provider of continuous development programmes) and Telestack Int Ltd (manufacturer of mobile conveyors and ship loading systems) are two companies visiting India for the first time.

New JV formed

CDE Ireland, a company specialising in mineral washing and processing equipment, has already decided to invest in India and has formed a joint venture with the city-based Torsa Machines to set up CDE Asia Ltd, a sales and technical support company headquartered in Kolkata.

It is learnt that the company, which manufactures equipment for quarrying, minerals and sand processing industries, has already won business worth £6 million from customers in Orissa, Goa and Uttaranchal. According to Mr Iain Walker, Export Development Manager for CDE Ireland, "We project strong growth over the next few years because of our expertise in the development of quality machinery that meets the specific requirements of individual sand and mineral processors."

He saw large opportunities in India for the company's extensive range of equipment.
