Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd has said it has got approval to sell its generic version of Sanofi-Aventis SA's Lasix diuretic drug in the US. The drug is used to treat heart failure and renal disease.

Ranbaxy received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to sell tablets of furosemide in 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg dosages, the company said in a statement.

Florida-based Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc (RPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories, would sell the drug in the US.

"This approval represents an opportunity for RPI to introduce another affordable generic alternative and further increase our ever-growing product portfolio to meet the needs of our customers as well as patients in the US healthcare system. This approval is the result a strategic alliance with Ipca Laboratories Ltd of Mumbai, who will develop a number of generic prescription pharmaceutical products which will be marketed in the US by RPI in the future, following US FDA approval," Mr Jim Meehan, Vice- President, US Sales and Marketing for RPI, said in the statement.
