Telecommunications Marketing - Promotions & Offers States - West Bengal BSNL unveils scheme for Calcutta prepaid users Our Bureau
Prerequisites for facility First, the customer must fill up a registration form stating his intention to avail of the service Second, both the telephones - the landline as well as the mobile - must be in the name of the same person
Kolkata , Sept. 24 The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched a pilot project in the Calcutta telecom district titled `Docking landlines of Calcutta Telephones for recharging of prepaid mobiles'. The facility was launched at a function held here on Saturday by the Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Dr Shakeel Ahmad. The facility allows prepaid mobile customers of BSNL Calcutta to recharge their mobiles from anywhere in the country and having the costs of the same charged to their landline phones. Under the facility, prepaid mobile customers of BSNL can dial a toll-free number 1800-345-6060 from their mobile phones from anywhere in the country and reload their mobile phones with talk time of a denomination of their choice. The charge for the same will then be added on to the person's landline telephone bill.
Two prerequisites
However, there are two prerequisites for the service to be reached. First, the customer must fill up a registration form stating his intention to avail himself of the service. And second, both the telephones - the landline as well as the mobile - must be in the name of the same person. BSNL Calcutta Telephones has a mobile customer base of around 5 lakh. As many as 90 per cent among them are prepaid customers. On Friday, BSNL also launched the BSNL 12555 Voice Services whereby customers can dial 12555 and access a range of voice services in English and Hindi. These include downloading of ring tones, dial-a-song, jokes, updates of on-going cricket matches, news updates and prayers.
Surrender of landlines
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ahmad said the facility would, hopefully, put a check on the surrender of landlines. "Since a customer would require to have a landline phone in his own name to avail of the facility for recharging prepaid mobiles, it is hoped that the initiative will put a check on the surrender of landlines by our prepaid mobile customers." Once successful, the pilot project would be replicated in other telecom circles across the country, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Dr S.K. Chakravarty, Chief General Manager of Calcutta Telephones, said the success of the pilot project would invigorate Calcutta Telephones to launch several new initiatives for the benefit of BSNL customers.
