Malaysia proposes ASEAN, India tourism summit

Malaysia is keen to join hands with India to promote tourism between the ASEAN region and India. As a first step, the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism has proposed a special ASEAN-India Tourism Summit at Kuala Lumpur next year.
Stating this at a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan B. Tengku Mansor said India was yet to respond to the invitation, but he was hopeful the Summit, to be held for the first time, could pave the way for promoting the regional cooperation for marketing their destinations. Stating that the ASEAN region had no competition and had been making joint efforts to promote convenient routes, the Minister said "the first of its kind ASEAN-India Tourism Summit" could further strengthen the ties among the countries through tourism.
Mr Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan also said the growing economies of Malaysia and India could open up new avenues of mutual investment opportunities with joint ventures in the hospitality and tourism sector. Malaysian hospitality industry was keen to initiate joint ventures with Indian companies for investment in that country, he said.
Malaysia was also keen to attract more visitors from India, who rank among the top ten countries in arrivals. On an average, Indian visitors stayed for 5.7 nights. Malaysian Tourism Ministry estimated the Indian arrivals to jump to 4,00,000 next year as against 2,25.789 tourists in 2005.
