The Hindu Business Line : Movement of rly rake hit on Kolkata, Amingaon ICD route

The movement of Railway rakes, both empty and loaded, between Kolkata Dock System and the Amingaon (Guwahati) inland container depot has been affected as floods have damaged tracks in the Rampurhat-Nalhati section of Eastern Railway.

This is peak season at Amingaon ICD for tea shipments handled through the Kolkata port.

It is learnt that two Amingaon-bound rakes, carrying about 150 empties, are stranded, one at Garhara and the other at Chittaranjan. There is, therefore, a move to run the rakes via Katihar in north Bihar.

Inquiries with Eastern Railway revealed that the water level is receding and that normal movement is likely to resume shortly.

Accumulation

Since no rakes are arriving at Amingaon, there is no question of any rake leaving it. As a result, 76 loaded containers - ready for shipment - are awaiting the rakes.The problem of accumulation would have been greater but for the non-availability of a sufficient number of empties. Only 21 empties are currently available at the ICD, though the demand is greater. The last rake with 70 loaded containers left the ICD for Kolkata Dock System on September 21.
