Chennai , Sept. 28

A 50,000-tonne Russian wheat consignment has been rejected by the State Trading Corporation (STC) as a higher percentage of "extraneous matter" was found in the cargo, according to a Chennai Port Trust official.

The consignment is part of the three lakh tonnes contracted by STC from the Geneva-based Agrico SA in July at $210-212 a tonne.

MV Astron Spirit, carrying the consignment, has been stuck at the Chennai port anchorage since September 4, according to the official.

Samples which were first tested by the Chennai port health officials was referred to the Central Food Technology Research Institute, Mysore, which has confirmed the findings of the health officials. "The wheat has foreign matter of 1.1 per cent against the permissible limit of one per cent," said the official, who did not wish to be identified.

The official said they would not accept the consignment and the seller would have to clean it.
