There is greater potential for benefits of all kinds to flow in, if active partnerships are sought between universities and industries, according to the Managing Director of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), Mr R. Rajamani.
Delivering the Foundation Day lecture at Mangalore University here on Friday, he said that both industry and universities exist to transform knowledge, skills and materials into products and services involving trained people, and both of them seek to add value in the process. Once a successful university-industry partnership is established, it raises the potential to deliver more output.
"As India is developing into a major force to reckon with, in terms of its knowledge potential, it is an imperative task for us to explore and build upon our inherent strength of human resources," he said.
Research activities
Stating that research activities carried out by the industry and universities have different objectives and characteristics, he said research in industry tends to be applied to new products and new processes, or to solving application or production problems. Research activities in universities tend to be carried out for generating and disseminating new knowledge.
In the early Sixties, the Central Government permitted teachers to provide consultancy services. This has helped to promote consultancy - particularly in IITs, IISc and research laboratories - making it an institutional activity instead of peripheral activity, he said.
MRPL has been using the services of educational institutions wherever possible, and it will continue its association with them for the mutual benefit of both, he added. Prof K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, presided over the function.
