`Handloom Mark Label' scheme launched

Our Bureau

Features two logos, one for domestic market and the other for exports.

Madurai , Sept. 29

The Deputy Director, Textile Committee, Mr N. Jeeva, launched here on Thursday the `Handloom Mark Label' scheme for hand-woven products.

The scheme, part of the measures taken by the Textile Ministry following the lifting of the textile quota regime under WTO, to assure the genuineness of the products in the market, has two logos, one for the domestic market and the other for exports.

While the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms functions as the nodal agency for the scheme, the Textile Committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing and popularising the scheme. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in Individual and master handloom weavers, apex and primary handloom weavers' cooperative societies, handloom development corporations, retailers, traders and exporters are eligible to apply for the logo. A two-member team would verify the quality based on the details provided and recommend the distribution of the logos.
