Sanction has been accorded for the doubling of the much-awaited Madurai-Dindigul broad gauge line with a provision of Rs 30 crore for the current financial year. The project, expected to cost around Rs 130 crore, would be completed by 2007-08. The line has been the most congested and the doubling of the line will help in easing the traffic and facilitate running more trains, said Mr Thomas Varghese, General Manager, Southern Railway, here on Friday. Addressing the media, he further said, the linking between Tiruchi-Pudukottai would be completed by the month-end and the Pudukottai-Karaikudi stretch, by April 2007. A proposal for doubling and electrification of the line between Chennai and Tuticorin has been forward to the Railway Board. The over-bridge works in progress in the city in Ellisnagar, Koodalnagar and Sellur would be completed around March-April 2007, he said.
Elaborating on the performance of the Southern Railway, he said the passenger earnings compared to last year have risen from Rs 663 crore to Rs 769 crore up to September 20th this year. Similarly the freight earnings have increased by 11 per cent from Rs 465.4 crore to Rs 520 crore.
The increase in passenger movement has registered 12 per cent growth from 23.4 crore to 26.3 crore, allaying the fear that the entry of low-cost airlines would affect the railways, he mentioned.
