Mumbai , Oct. 14

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd will provide IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) service in Mumbai, in a tie-up with IOL Broadband Ltd.

The service would be made available to all MTNL broadband subscribers from October 21, said Mr R.S.P Sinha, Chairman & Managing Director, MTNL.

The company plans to extend IPTV service to its existing 2.2 million subscribers on a preferential basis - first to its broadband subscribers, followed by landline customers and others.

IPTV will offer subscribers about 24 TV channels (including some pay channels) and will encapsulate add-on features such as Real Time Interactive TV, Video On Demand, Pause and Play, Time Shifted Television Viewing and eLearning. The monthly tariff for the service (excluding add-ons) would be Rs 199, said Mr Sinha.

Mr Sinha ruled out any "additional investment'' on MTNL's part to launch this service.

MTNL and IOL Broadband are working out terms for revenue sharing, said the IOL officials. IOL Broadband has IP-based Next Generation Network and IPTV solutions. The content (comprising television channels and movies from Warner Bros, MGM, Universal and others) will be compressed and streamed to customers on 1.8 Mbps to 2.5-Mbps bandwidth.
