Farmers and SEZs

This is with reference to "SEZs without land acquisition" (Business Line, October 14): Of late, a lot of interest has been created about SEZs. There have been interviews, news reports and debates on the issue. Economists, agriculture scientists and politicians have failed to address the basic problem of farmer suicides. While an industrialist can determine the selling price of his product before production, a farmer is at the mercy of middlemen when it comes to the price of his produce.

The industrial revolution, Green and White revolutions, and the IT boom in India have left farmers behind. This is the right opportunity for land-owners to rightfully claim what is their due.

As the author rightly points out, land is the only raw material for SEZ developers. It is high time that the media created awareness among farmers that they can indeed benefit from industrial development and become partners in progress.
