Bangalore , Oct. 18 Faced with severe power shortages in the rural areas, Vijaya Bank has kicked off a project for installing solar power units in all its rural branches. Speaking about the project, Vijaya Bank's Executive Director, Mr T. Valliappan, said: "The pilot project was successful .We will reduce our reliance on grid for operationalising our computer network in these branches." The pilot project was done on 60 branches linking up all the computer networks on the solar power backup. With the success of the pilot project, the bank has intended to install solar power units in all 400 of its rural branches, he added. This would also allow bank's core banking solution work effectively. Already the bank has linked up all its branches through the V-SAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal). With the installation of the solar power generators, network failures would be minimised reducing difficulties to rural customers. This would include ATM networks.
