Letters Poverty and child labour
Thirteen years ago, the UN General Assembly declared October 17 as International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Of course, thirteen years is not a long time. Even so, the situation around world shows that absolute poverty has only since.According to a World Health Organisation report, majority of the Indian children are underweight. In this context, it is worth analysing the impact of the abolition of child labour in India. Though the intention is good, as someone has said, "The road to Hell is paved with many good intentions." Without eradicating poverty, banning child labour could lead to more misery.
Passing a law against child labour is not going to solve the problem unless the government (and NGOs) take positive measures to educate children. "Can the government solve the problem of poverty by enacting a law against poverty?" Eradication of poverty and child labour must go hand in hand. V. S. Venkatavaradan Salem
