Kolkata , Oct. 31 Ascon Agro Products Exporters & Builders Pvt Ltd of the Pailan Group has firmed up an investment plan to set up a 100 per cent export oriented meat processing unit for goat and sheep at Dhaniakhali in Hooghly District of West Bengal. About eight acres has been taken from surplus land of Indo-France Potato Flake Company of the group, which is implementing a potato flake processing unit. The group is said to have already invested about Rs 25 crore. The company's Chairman & Managing Director, Mr Apurba Saha, has said that farmers in Birbhum and Bankura districts of the State have been targeted to source raw meat because they are experts in the rearing of goat and sheep. A company press release has stated that farmers will be offered with breedable goats/sheep aged about 12-18 months, with provision of sufficient food, treatment facilities, medicines and vaccines, among other things. The Birbhum Zilla Parishad and Birbhum District Rural Development Cell have already agreed to sign this agreement with Ascon as the entire process is canalised through Zilla Parishad and the district authorities. Goat and sheep meat will be marketed as low fat, bone-in carcass, bone-in and boneless specific cuts following international standards and for the world market. At 100 per cent capacity utilisation, the proposed unit will produce 16 tonnes of bone-in carcass of goat and sheep per day, which comes to 4,800 tonnes per year. The project will utilise the imported modernised slaughter lines from Germany and Italy.
