Insurance staff hail Centre's stand

Kochi , Oct. 31

The General Insurance Officers All India Association has welcomed the Union Government's stand that the Kerala health insurance scheme for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families should be implemented through the public sector insurance companies. It was also clarified that only PSU insurers were eligible for the Central Government subsidy of Rs 300 under the universal health insurance scheme.

The Universal Health Insurance scheme, which was designed by the Union Government three years ago, has been implemented through four public sector insurance companies. The scheme for Kerala was awarded to a private insurer because they had quoted the lowest premium amount. However, it was found that the premium was inadequate to meet the hospitalisation and other medical claims.

Mr P.P. Mohanan, Kerala State Vice-President of GIOAIA, asked the State Government to come forward and implement the scheme in association with public sector insurance companies.
