Huge volume at Coonoor tea sale

P.S. Sundar

More numbers likely because of good rains

Coonoor , Nov. 2

A huge volume of 14.35 lakh kg was on offer for Sale No. 44 of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association on Thursday. The sale will continue on Friday.

This is the highest volume offered so far in 2006. This is some 2.1 lakh kg more than that offered last week which itself was a combined auction because of the fortnight gap due to Diwali-Ramzan holidays. The highest volume so far offered was 12.6 lakh kg on May 25.

In the corresponding week last year, there was no sale because of Diwali. But, in the sale that followed, the volume was only 11.22 lakh kg despite a fortnight gap. The higher volume is said to be because of good harvest arising from welcome showers in the Nilgiris tea pockets. Auctioneers said that they expected increased volume in the coming weeks as well because of the continuous showers in the last fortnight. "We are sure of increased volume than quality which is the normal victim during mass production," an auctioneer told Business Line.

Of the 14.35-lakh kg now on offer, as much as 10.09 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and 4.26 lakh kg dust grades. Again, as much as 13.41 lakh kg belong to CTC teas and only 0.94 lakh kg orthodox teas.
