In less than a year of operations, Nokia India has manufactured over 20 million mobile handsets at its facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, according to a press release from Nokia.

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who visited the facility here today handed over commemorative handsets to two of Nokia's earliest employees to mark the production and shipping out of the 20 millionth handset, the release said.

The company started commercial production in January and was formally inaugurated in March 2006. The facility is present at the Nokia Telecom Park spread over 210 acres and has six global component manufacturers, including Salcomp, Aspocomp, Foxconn, Perlos and Jabil that are expected to commence operations by mid 2007.

When fully operational, the facility will have eight suppliers and employ over 20,000 people.

The press release quoting Mr Jukka Lehtela, Nokia's Director-India operations, said that Chennai has proved to be an ideal location for Nokia because of its skilled resources and a conducive business environment.

India is expected to be the second largest market in terms of volumes for Nokia.
